Amanda Rungis

Dr Amanda Rungis, Director & Principle Optometrist
B.Optom.Hons, UNSW; M.Optom. UNSW
Vice President, Orthokeratology Society of Oceania (OSO)
Board member, International Academy of Orthokeratology & Myopia Control (IAOMC)
Volunteer Supervisor for 4th & 5th year Optometry students, UNSW

Being an Optometrist is so much more than a profession to Amanda. Her commitment to deliver world-class patient care with a focus on prevention and early intervention is what drives her every day. This is true not only in the practice she founded in 2005, but also through her determination to educate the public about how a simple annual eye examination and the right treatment can correct, enhance and most importantly, protect a person’s vision for life.

People tend to take their vision for granted until something happens that disturbs it or puts them at risk of losing it altogether. Freeing as many people as I can from the frustrations and limitations associated with vision impairment and the worry about potential future vision loss is my mission and passion in life.

Amanda’s interest in Optometry began at the age of 15 when she completed work experience for an independent Optometrist. That interest became a deeply personal mission when Macular Degeneration (Australia’s leading cause of preventable blindness) claimed her grandfather’s vision in 2003. That was the defining moment that drove Amanda to open her own practice and invest in the best technology available to ensure none of her patients would ever have to go through what her grandfather did or helplessly watch a loved one suffer as she had.

A trailblazer for eye care on the Central Coast

Since the day she opened the doors of her state-of-the-art practice, Amanda has set the bar high. She was the first Optometrist in Australia to invest in the MPOD, a machine that quickly and painlessly detects those at greatest risk of Macular Degeneration. Today she is one of only a few Optometrists on the Central Coast qualified to fit Orthokeratology (OrthoK), a sophisticated non-surgical process that gently reshapes the front of the eye with special lenses worn overnight. She is also the only Optometry practice in the region to offer a complete Myopia Control service, a service she is deeply passionate about due to the proven benefits it delivers children in particular.

“Imagine if you could slow the progression of your child’s short-sightedness and prevent future eye diseases in the process. Or increase your visually impaired teenager’s self esteem by giving them options that enable them to be glasses and contacts-free. Imagine if you could have the best possible vision for work and leisure without glasses or invasive laser surgery. I am proud to offer all those options for my patients and make a real difference in their health and wellbeing.”

Amanda’s expertise in Myopia Control and OrthoK is highly regarded internationally. She regularly trains other Optometrists and is invited to share her knowledge at global conferences.
