Kid's Vision

A quarter of Australian children have some form of vision problem. 66% of these children are struggling through school, because they have not had their vision problem detected. This means that approximately 1 million children are living in Australia with undiagnosed vision problems.

Medicare statistics show that less than 20% of children have ever had an eye examination.

Good vision is essential for a child to reach their full potential. More than 80% of information children receive about the world comes through their eyes. Vision problems can severely impact on a child’s educational, physical and social development.

As children spend a large amount of time at home completing homework, reading, playing video games and watching television, parents play a crucial role in identifying vision problems.  It is important to identify the signs early as often a child is not aware they have a problem. The earlier and the more regularly children’s eyes are examined, the better the prospects for learning, as well as sporting achievement.

The Optometrists Association Australia recommends that all children have a comprehensive eye and vision examination every 2 years throughout their schooling. This is because what is normal for a 5 year old is not necessarily normal for a 15 year old. For example most 5 year old are longsighted & they outgrow this by the age of 8 -10. However, if they don’t, and they are still longsighted at 15, with the increased study & near vision they then do, they are at increased risk of eye strain & poor school and / or sports performance.
